The mud tank in solid control systems serves as critical equipment for mud storage, blending, solid-liquid separation, and circulation. As an integral component of the mud circulation system, it facilitates mud transfer from the wellhead to mud pumps. Solid control equipment mounted on the tank separates drilling solids from the mud, which is then conditioned and blended through the weighting and mixing system to meet drilling process requirements.

Classification and selection of solids control mud tanks

Classification of Solid Control Mud Tanks
Based on tank bottom geometry, mud tanks are categorized into square-bottomed and conical-bottomed types. Structurally, they are classified as vertical and horizontal configurations. Tank surfaces and walkways feature anti-slip steel plates and bar grating, with foldable circular steel pipe railings using secure plug-in connections for easy relocation. Staircases employ U-steel frames with anti-slip grating treads.

Selection Criteria for Solid Control Mud Tanks
The selection of mud tanks depends primarily on drilling depth and scale:

  • 3,000-meter drilling operations require 4-5 tank units
  • 4,000-meter drilling operations need 6-8 tank units
  • 5,000-meter drilling operations demand 8+ tank units
